The Blowout of the Hoos And The 20-Game ACC Schedule

Virginia Tech, Inside the Numbers
Virginia Tech hammered UVa on Monday night. (Jon Fleming)

Raise your hand if you saw last night’s Virginia Tech-UVa result coming.

I’ve got my hand raised about halfway up. I thought the Hokies would win because they were at home, but in no way, shape or form did I see them winning by 34 points.

Tech gave up 96 points to Carolina on Saturday, and then conceded just 41 two days later against UVa. It was like watching a different team, with the rather huge caveat that Virginia is horrible offensively.

The Hokies beat the Hoos by 35 in 1961, and that’s the only time they’ve hammered their in-state rival worse than last night. The last time UVa scored fewer points in a game against the Hokies was 1942 (25 points). My long-deceased grandfather was in the corps at Tech at that time, and that got me wondering whether he was in attendance for that one.
