In September, Turner Ashby (Va.) wide receiver Micah Matthews backed off a long-time commitment to South Carolina for baseball. While that specific decision didn’t work out, Matthews hasn’t lost sight of one main desire: to play football and baseball at the college level.

Matthews begins baseball practice next week, where he figures to shine as an outfielder. On the football field, he’s a dynamic wide receiver, with quick burst and good hands. Now, the challenge is to find a school that will let him play both. He’s making progress, and while he’s not at a decision just yet, he has a pair of official visits that could accelerate his timeline.

“Some schools have told me themselves, ‘we’ve had guys do that and having you here wouldn’t be an experiment and we see you being free in our program to do this,’” Matthews said. “Other schools have printed a full out schedule. This time in football, this time in baseball. The schools have been up front and clear with schedules. The schools I talk to, they have communication across staffs, coaches being friends with each other. Some coaches live next to each other, and BBQ [together], and I love to see that. Some coaches aren’t open, and that’s fine, that’s easy for me. No need to waste either of our times.”
