Georgia State transfer Montavious Cunningham is an under-the-radar find. He didn’t get any kind of all-conference attention in the Sun Belt, and, at least in general media, was overshadowed by teammate Travis Glover, who got the first-team award. Despite the lack of fanfare, I’m betting he’ll be a starter at one of the Hokies’ guard spots over the next two seasons. Let’s see how he might fit into the Virginia Tech offense in 2024.
Watching him in games, I found he was interesting even before the ball was snapped. First, Cunningham spent a lot of time standing up in a two-point stance, maybe even more than Silas Dzansi did a few years back for Tech. Where Dzansi put some weight on his front hand when he went to a three-point stance, Cunningham sometimes almost frog-squatted when he put a hand down. If that’s his preference, I could imagine it carrying over to Tech if he plays tackle, though if he does help inside, he’ll probably have to dig his hand in more.
