He tried to look elsewhere. Last fall, Christiansburg (Va.) three-star offensive lineman Carter Stallard took visits to Maryland and West Virginia. But for five weekends last fall, he made the 10-minute commute to Blacksburg for a Virginia Tech home game.

Stallard actually missed just three Hokies games during the 2023 season: Pittsburgh in September at Lane Stadium, at Boston College in November, and the Military Bowl in December against Tulane. Each trip, each time he watched Virginia Tech, only affirmed where he planned to play college football.

On Monday, Stallard made his choice public: he plans to stay in the New River Valley and play for the Hokies. But looking back, Stallard said he knew last summer for certain he’d make that decision and first thought about it when he got the scholarship offer June 1. Now, he’s setting his sights on getting himself as ready as possible for the college level.
