Virginia Tech’s Turnover Problem: More Than A One-Man Issue

Turnovers are a huge issue for Virginia Tech men’s basketball right now, and they showed up yet again in the Hokies’ loss to UVa on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers are a very good defensive team, but this is becoming a trend against all opponents.

Oddly enough, turnovers weren’t a problem in Tech’s 79-77 loss to South Carolina. The Hokies had just five that day. But here are their turnover numbers in their other six losses, with the turnover differential in parentheses:

• FAU: 14 (+1)
• Auburn: 21 (-13)
• Wake: 19 (-12)
• FSU: 16 (-6)
• Miami: 15 (-4)
• UVa: 15 (-8)

Tech’s last three losses have all been by single digits, and just look at all those turnover margins. Yikes. All else being equal, that’s the difference. Tech is 208th nationally in turnover rate and No. 14 in the ACC in conference-only games. That’s bad.
