Ask A Back Judge: Reviewing The Fan Votes

Ask A Back Judge
The Military Bowl officials had a good game, especially when you consider the weather. (Ivan Morozov)

In last week’s Ask a Back Judge, I decided to ask what you guys thought of a couple of potential holds (real “I’ll answer your question with another question” energy there). This is always a fun exercise among officials when we’re trying to find consistency across an organization, and it’s an element I think I’ll continue to include going forward. Just for funsies, it’ll be an interesting challenge for me to see how close to a 50/50 split I can get with the plays I select.

Now for the big reveal: how did we collectively do assessing hold/no-hold on these plays? If you didn’t get a chance to check out these plays, go read my Tulane piece, or see the video clips below. Once again, we’re looking at the following factors when deciding whether to throw a holding flag or not: 1) A material restriction, 2) It occurs at the point of attack, and 3) It had a substantial effect on the play (the defender couldn’t go where he wanted to go).

First up, let’s take a look at Parker Clements sealing the edge on a big Kyron Drones run.

Was Parker Clements (70) guilty of a hold?
