UVA Study: Improving Offense, Subpar Defense

The regular season comes to a close in Charlottesville. In the big picture, Virginia Tech has a few more wins than UVA. But getting into the details, UVA has a tougher schedule, a nice win over UNC, and gave Louisville all it could handle. On the third hand, we’re talking about the wild and wacky world of ACC football, and we’re adding an end-of-season rivalry game to that mix. There’s no telling what could happen.

The UVA Offense

Well, I fire up UVA/Duke, and what’s the first snap of the game?

Yup, that’s a blocking back going right up the gut. The bulk of their runs seem to be about hitting the edge with zone runs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out with Iso and try to make a livin’ off of it and play-action. They also have a quick receiver who feasts on jet sweeps and screens…more on him in a sec. And they can do all of this fast: Duke was caught off-guard several times by UVA’s tempo.
