Ask A Back Judge: Blindside Blocks, Pick Plays And More

Forgive me if you’re tired of reading this, but wins are just so much more fun to cover than losses. Hot take, I know. The Virginia Tech win over Boston College happened to be a happy mix of satisfying to watch and containing enough interesting calls to be worth discussing.

To start, I’ll go over one of my personal favorite new rules in all of college football: the blind side block.

Blindside Block

The Play: Third-and-5 from the Tech 8-yard line, BC is driving with less than four minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter to try to cut into a 38-7 Hokies lead. Eagles QB Castellanos throws a little swing pass to the boundary to tight Jeremiah Franklin (#17), who is immediately tackled at the line of scrimmage by Mansoor Delane. Just before the pass arrives, receiver Lewis Bond (#11) delivers a de-cleater of a crack-back block on Tech LB Keli Lawson (#21). Flags come in at the end of the play from both the deep and short wing.
