Bitter: Early-Morning Wake-Up Call Jolts Hokies In Rout Of Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The phone rang at 7:13 a.m., but surely it was a mistake. The hotel wake-up call Saturday morning outside of Boston wasn’t supposed to come until 7:30. Hokies cornerback Dorian Strong chalked it up as a misdial and plopped his head back down on the pillow.

Two minutes later, the full force and fury of Virginia Tech’s staff, every analyst and graduate assistant, came roaring through the hallway, loudly pounding on doors and rousing every player out of their deep sleep. Reveille is more subtle.

“I just hear the whole hallway, everybody, going ‘AAAA-YYYE, TIME TO GET UP!’” Strong said. “I was mad. I’m not going to lie. It just threw me off. Once I heard what it was for, I’m like, all right, all right, all right. Let’s take this anger out on this football team, for real.”

The Hokies did just that in a 48-22 thrashing of Boston College, jumping on the Eagles from the get-go, playing with a sense of urgency that’s been lacking in road games this year and putting to bed the notion that they can’t beat someone away from Lane Stadium.
