On Wednesday, I wrote one of my favorite lines that I’ve written in the nearly two decades that I’ve covered Virginia Tech football. When I posted the link to Brandon Patterson’s Syracuse breakdown on the message board, here’s what I wrote:

“Synopsis of Brandon’s video review: Tech blocked poorly, but the scheme was so good and so varied that ‘Cuse didn’t know what to do, so it didn’t matter.”

I don’t like writing that Virginia Tech blocked poorly, but I love writing that the Hokies’ gameplan and scheming was so sound that it helped cover up specific weaknesses, and the offense was able to click anyway despite some issues with player execution.

There were a lot of missed blocks on Thursday night, but Syracuse had so many players going in the wrong direction that it didn’t matter. That’s the type of scheme that I was begging for since last season and I assumed we’d get it when the Hokies had staff changes and they recruited Kyron Drones. It didn’t happen right away, but better late than never.
