Brent Pry and Dino Babers will square off as head coaches a week from Thursday in Lane Stadium when Virginia Tech hosts Syracuse, but they’ve met once before: Aug. 31, 2002.
Pry was in his first season as a defensive coordinator on Rickey Bustle’s staff at Louisiana, coming from Western Carolina. Babers was in his second (and final) year as the offensive coordinator for then-No. 23 Texas A&M, who hosted the Ragin’ Cajuns in the season opener.
It was a record-setting performance, but not in a good way. Louisiana quarterback Jon Van Cleave threw six interceptions and the offense turned it over 10 times in a 31-7 loss to the Aggies. All 31 of Texas A&M’s points came off turnovers.
The six Louisiana interceptions are still the most in a single game in Sun Belt history. Likewise, the 10 turnovers forced by the Aggies are still the most in a single game in Big 12 history.
