Virginia Tech Football Practice Report: Pry And Babers To Reunite, Injuries & More

Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry reunites with Syracuse head coach Dino Babers on Thursday, Oct. 26. (Ivan Morozov)

Brent Pry and Dino Babers will square off as head coaches a week from Thursday in Lane Stadium when Virginia Tech hosts Syracuse, but they’ve met once before: Aug. 31, 2002.

Pry was in his first season as a defensive coordinator on Rickey Bustle’s staff at Louisiana, coming from Western Carolina. Babers was in his second (and final) year as the offensive coordinator for then-No. 23 Texas A&M, who hosted the Ragin’ Cajuns in the season opener.

It was a record-setting performance, but not in a good way. Louisiana quarterback Jon Van Cleave threw six interceptions and the offense turned it over 10 times in a 31-7 loss to the Aggies. All 31 of Texas A&M’s points came off turnovers.

The six Louisiana interceptions are still the most in a single game in Sun Belt history. Likewise, the 10 turnovers forced by the Aggies are still the most in a single game in Big 12 history.
