Notebook: Virginia Tech Offense Thrives In Wake Forest Victory

Over the last few weeks, Virginia Tech wide receivers coach Fontel Mines has challenged his group.

The Hokies’ main wideouts — Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton and Stephen Gosnell — are experienced, and they’ve been through the battles before, unlike quarterback Kyron Drones, who started just his fifth college game against Wake Forest on Saturday.

Mines’ ask: Help out your young quarterback and make plays. They did that against the Demon Deacons, accounting for 321 yards through the air, the most against an ACC foe since the loss at Boston College in 2019 (344 yards).

They made life easy for Drones, who had a career day — 20-of-29, 321 yards and two touchdowns through the air with a team-high 59 yards on the ground — and became the third Tech quarterback since 1987 to throw for over 300 yards and rush for 50 in a single game, joining Jerod Evans and Bryan Randall.
