An Improved Psyche

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech is starting to look a lot better! (Ivan Morozov)

My sense of relief when Virginia Tech beat Pitt was so strong that I don’t think I actually enjoyed the win. The Hokies needed to win that one badly, so badly that the relief that I felt prevented any fun from creeping into my mind. I was happy, but it wasn’t an exciting type of happiness. It was of a “thank goodness, we really needed that one” type of feeling.

Then, when the Hokies did something similar to Wake Forest, I couldn’t watch the game, because for the first time since 2005, I wasn’t in town for a home game. Ugh. Probably the best performance of the year, all things considered, and I didn’t witness it. Hopefully the Hokies can do the same thing against Syracuse. I’ll be mentally prepared to enjoy that one.

To top it off, I didn’t have the best game watching experience after flying back home on Sunday. I record all VT games on YouTubeTV, and when I watched the game back this afternoon, it kept getting interrupted by random commercials. Yes, the normal commercials during the TV broadcast were shown, but as Wake Forest lined up to go for it on fourth-and-1, a Chili’s commercial came on, followed by several others. By the time the commercial ended, Virginia Tech had the ball again. Not only was I getting extra commercials, but the game didn’t stop while the commercials were playing. It kept right on playing in the background while I watched commercials. Large chunks of the game were wiped out as a result, including two of Wake Forest’s three turnovers. It was frustrating.

With that being said, I’d guess I missed about 25% of the game. That’s not ideal, but just by looking at the box score, I don’t think this one requires too much explanation. The Hokies are sticking with the offense that they ran against Pitt, and it’s working. Combine that with a much-improved defensive performance and the Hokies got another win by three scores. This one was a 7-point game in the fourth quarter, but it never really felt that close, did it?
