In retirement, Bud Foster isn’t as ubiquitous on the Lane Stadium field as he was during his 25 years as the Hokies’ vaunted defensive coordinator, but Virginia Tech plucked him out of the crowd Saturday to lead the “Let’s go, Hokies” chant during the first quarter break.
Before egging on the stadium-wide cheer, Foster ad-libbed a mini-motivational speech with a line hundreds of defenders from Tech’s past must have heard before.
“We need to make it miserable for that group over there wearing white,” Bud said into the mic, pointing to Wake Forest’s bench.
The Hokies defense must have listened.
