For nearly three years, Turner Ashby (Va.) athlete Micah Matthews thought he knew his future home. An outfielder and one of the top baseball prospects in the 2025 recruiting class, he’d committed to South Carolina for baseball while just an eighth grader.

On Sept. 19, Matthews reversed course and backed off of that commitment. He’s now looking for an opportunity to play both baseball and football at the collegiate level, and he has six football offers that have at least explored that possibility. But now regrouping, Matthews said he wants to heavily rethink his recruitment.

“Honestly, I’m just taking this in, enjoying the moment,” he said. “I want to make a list here soon and finalize it. I feel like that’s going to happen going into the summer, fall of next year. But right now, I’m welcoming any opportunity with open arms, thoroughly looking through everything. On baseball, it’ll just tag along with football. I’m an athlete, so I can do anything as good. If I find somewhere to help me do both at college, [it] is important.”
