Chris Coleman: Good question. It’s not as if Virginia Tech has been completely unable to move the ball in the first quarter, though of course it could do a lot better. The Hokies got all the way down to the ODU 1-yard line before being stopped. An early drive stalled against Purdue, and some questioned the playcalling. Here is what the Hokies have done in the first quarter this season:
ODU: 23 plays, 73 yards, 3.2 ypp
Purdue: 9 plays, 37 yards, 4.1 ypp
Rutgers: 22 plays, 73 yards, 3.3 ypp
Total: 54 plays, 183 yards, 3.4 ypp
So they’ve moved the ball a little, but generally speaking, those are pretty bad numbers. The ODU and Rutgers first quarters were nearly identical. The Hokies dominated possession in both of those games in the first quarter but only came away with two special teams points. ODU ran 10 plays for zero yards in the first quarter, while Rutgers ran 10 plays for 34 yards. Despite those numbers favoring the Hokies, they led ODU just 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and they actually trailed Rutgers 7-0.
