Kyron Drones Or Grant Wells? Neither Brent Pry Nor Virginia Tech’s Depth Chart Is Saying

Will Grant Wells or Kyron Drones start for Virginia Tech on Saturday at Marshall? (Ivan Morozov)

If you were looking for the Virginia Tech depth chart to offer clarity about who will start at quarterback on Saturday at Marshall — Kyron Drones or Grant Wells, it reads — think again.

Coach Brent Pry says to not put much stock in what the team puts out on Tuesdays anyway, given the four additional days of evaluation they’ll have during the week.

“I think all week takes an evaluation,” Pry said. “We had a heck of a competition with those guys all preseason camp. If Grant’s healthy enough to get a good week of practice in, then we’ll make that decision on Friday or Saturday. Who gives us the best chance to play well and beat Marshall?”

In retrospect, there was no decision to be made last week. Wells wasn’t healthy enough to play at Rutgers, still feeling the aftereffects of a lower-body injury suffered against Purdue, though Tech hoped he would be an emergency guy for the game, according to Pry. But after Wells didn’t practice all week and couldn’t move well at all in pre-game, Pry admitted Tuesday: “I don’t know that he really was [an emergency guy].”
