A Forgotten Big East Rivalry: Looking Back At Virginia Tech-Rutgers Moments

When they write odes about the old Big East, back when football was football and Virginia Tech began its ascent, a few rivalries get all the attention.

Miami’s the headliner in the conversation, but Syracuse often matched wits, Pitt was always a brawl, Boston College carried over into the ACC and West Virginia engendered the most vitriol.

Rutgers rarely, if ever, gets mentioned — for good reason.

The Hokies and Scarlet Knights haven’t played many classics. They went on radically divergent paths in the ’90s, with Tech getting onto the national radar while Rutgers bottomed out before Greg Schiano’s arrival. Things got so lopsided that Virginia Tech has won 12 straight in the series dating back to 1993.
