Ask A Back Judge: Roughing The Passer

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells was injured on a roughing the passer call. (Jon Fleming)

Alright, folks, that Purdue game was painful.  Huge props in particular to anyone who stuck around for 6+ hours to watch what became a night game in Lane.  We’re not gonna talk about anything related to the running game today, for what I hope are obvious reasons.  Speaking of painful, though, let’s take a look at a low shot on Wells that gave Tech a second chance at a touchdown to close the first half.

Many thanks to HolidayInnHokie for the question from the Subscribers board!

The Play:

3rd and goal from the Purdue 5, 19 seconds remaining in the first half.  Tech QB Grant Wells drops to pass and is immediately pressured by a blitzing safety, Dillon Thieneman (31).  A retreating Wells is hit low as he throws to a wide open Tuten mere steps from the goal line, but the pass falls incomplete, and a flag is thrown late in the backfield.
