Brent Pry Has Won The Offseason; Now He Must Win The Regular Season

Brent Pry has won the offseason. Can Virginia Tech get results now? (Jon Fleming)

There’s no doubt that Brent Pry has won both of his offseasons as head coach of Virginia Tech football.

From the very beginning, he engaged the fanbase with a warm, energetic personality. He did a great job at his introductory press conference, endearing himself to Tech fans by retaining J.C. Price and bringing in alums such as Pierson Prioleau and Xavier Adibi. He didn’t slow down in the summer, hitting the road and engaging with Tech alumni groups around the state, and he excels in those type of settings.

The most recent offseason was more of the same, with one major addition: the commitment of higher-ranked recruits than the ones who were committing at this time last year. Pry talks well, he recruits well, he energizes the donors well and he never turns down an opportunity to promote the program. He’s showed that he’s the perfect football coach for this program for nine months out of the year.

Now he’s got to make progress in the three months that ultimately decide a football coach’s fate. The wins have to start showing up on a more regular basis, and that needs to start happening in 2023. Not 2024, or 2025, but 2023. Another 3-win season is not desirable.
