Cox (Va.) defensive end Gerard Johnson doesn’t remember the exact moment, but at some point on June 24, the second day of his official visit to Virginia Tech, he had an epiphany.

It was on this day that the big activity took place at nearby Claytor Lake. Johnson went tubing with Hokies players, coaches and staff, and realized he wanted to join the group for more than just the day. He waited a bit longer to make it public, on July 1, but Johnson said he knew he wanted to commit Virginia Tech.

“I really didn’t know until my second day on the official,” Johnson said. “I was like, ‘this is where I need to be.’ Really, the whole day, I felt like one of the guys. My family knew already. My dad said I was going to commit. It just felt like a second home.
