The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: Most Talented Teams, Hokie Club Membership, And More

1) Top three most talented college football teams you’ve seen play in person? – All The Way

Chris Coleman: Well, I certainly have to go 2001 Miami as my No. 1. I don’t think there’s any doubt that was the most talented team that I have ever seen in person. I won’t go into detail about their personnel all over the field, but I’ll point out that there were at least four future NFL running backs on that team: Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee and Najeh Davenport.

The ‘Canes were so stacked that Davenport and McGahee only got one carry each and Gore only four. Portis got 34. The running back room is an extreme example, but Miami was stacked like that all over the field. In fact, I don’t think a team like that could exist in 2023 because of the transfer portal. It’s hard to imagine all of those running backs especially being on the same roster in this day and age.

I read a stat recently about the 2001 Hurricanes that is one of the most impressive sports statistics I’ve ever seen. Apparently if Miami had never scored an offensive touchdown all season, it still would have gone 8-4. I haven’t gone through the box scores to confirm whether or not that’s true, but it’s got enough play this week that I assume it’s legit.
