The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: The Spring Game, And The Quarterback Competition

Virginia Tech
The Virginia Tech quarterback competition should heat up in August. (Ivan Morozov)

1) Andy has Kyron Drones’ chances of winning the job at 50/50. IIRC, from your prior comments, you believe he has very little experience and a slow/long throwing motion. It would seem you give Drones nowhere near a 50/50 chance. Is that correct? It would seem to me the only reason Drones would win out is if we going to a “battering ram QB” offense. Do you agree with that? If we do go that type of offense, what are your feelings on it? — NokieHokie

Chris Coleman: I may go 60/40 Wells, but it’s splitting hairs. The main point I’ve been trying to make is that it’s unfair to expect Drones to have a legit shot to pass Wells in the spring. He’s an inexperienced guy who has spent the spring learning the playbook! If you don’t know the plays yet, then you can’t challenge the starter. That’s how football works. This might sound harsh, but I think the people who actually expected him to pass Wells in the spring pay attention to high school star rankings way too much, which isn’t the right way to look at it.

If it were just about star rankings, then Drones wouldn’t be here. If it were just about star rankings, then 4-star Kyron Drones would still be at Baylor because he would have beaten out 3-star Blake Shapen for the starting quarterback job last season. He didn’t, and he’s only a year behind Shapen in terms of eligibility, so he left. However, he’s gotten himself into a somewhat similar situation at Virginia Tech where he’s behind a more experienced player who has more time in the system.

All of that said, I do expect Drones to make a push in August. I think that will be the point where it will be fair to judge him, because by that time he should be more comfortable with the offense, especially after a summer of studying film from the spring. I think it’s too harsh to judge him right now. It’s not fair to him, because he’s only practiced 14 times in a Virginia Tech uniform. I don’t have a dog in that fight; I just want to see both guys treated fairly by the fan base in this competition. (And yeah, I know, I’m fighting a losing battle there.)
