The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: Losing Mike Jones & The Defensive Staff

Virginia Tech, First Bank & Trust
Mike Jones has departed Virginia Tech after two years. (Jon Fleming)

1) Mike Jones: Overall positive, negative or neutral for the men’s basketball program? Going back in time, would you have still made the hire if you were Coach Young? – GretnaHokie

Chris Coleman: I was a history major, so I’m automatically trained to believe that you have to let time pass before you can look back and completely analyze the effectiveness of someone’s tenure. I really liked former VT assistant Chester Frazier when he was here, and I thought it stunk when he left. But I think even I underestimated his influence. He’s a fiery guy behind the scenes who coaches with a lot of energy, and he’s always shown the ability to instill toughness on the defensive end. Those things have progressively gotten worse since his departure, so as time has passed, my view of him as gotten more and more positive.

Here are the adjusted defensive efficiency rankings for each of Frazier’s teams during his coaching career (2012-19 at Kansas State, 2019-21 at Virginia Tech, 21-23 at Illinois)…
