The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: Wide Receivers

Virginia Tech
How will Jaylin Lane factor in at Virginia Tech? (@j_lane_2)

1) How often did Virginia Tech WRs actually line up in the slot in 2022, and how did that compare to 2021? I’m talking specifically about WRs. It seems to me that if your offense is largely based on 2-TE formations, then more often than not if you have a slot receiver, it’s going to be that 2nd TE/h-back or a RB who has motioned out, rather than a true slot WR. – GusDaMan

Chris Coleman: Good question. Here’s how the numbers break down using the data available on Pro Football Focus.

2021: 866 total offensive snaps, 712 snaps in the slot by true wide receivers.
2022: 762 total offensive snaps, 654 snaps in the slot by true wide receivers.

It can be tough to compare because sometimes there may be multiple true wide receivers lined up in the slot, which means that it counts as two snaps in the slot on one play. Also, remember that the 2021 offense was impacted greatly by the loss of James Mitchell. 18 of his 74 snaps that year came in the slot. Had he played the entire season, he likely would have taken away a few of those slot snaps from true wideouts.
