The Virginia Tech 2023 Recruiting Class: The Defense

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Chris Marve will have a lot of new defensive backs to work with. (Ivan Morozov)

There’s more positional fluidity amongst the Virginia Tech defensive signees than their offensive counterparts. Many of the defensive backs could play either corner or safety. There’s also one player who lined up at defensive end in high school who could be a linebacker in college, and another who lined up at linebacker who could eventually transition to defensive end depending on how big he gets.

To avoid confusion, I’m listing the signees at the position Virginia Tech used on early signing day on Dec. 21. Heights and weights will also come from that page. If I think the player could end up at a different position, I’ll make note of it in my comments. Like Tuesday’s offense article, I’m going to focus on high school recruits only. We’ll deal with all the transfer portal guys after the window closes on January 18.

DE Ishmael Findlayter (6-4, 240, Toronto, Canada)

Both of Virginia Tech’s defensive line signees are defensive ends. The first thing I’ll say is that I wish the Hokies had been able to sign a defensive tackle in this class. They heavily pursued Elijah Hughes of Northern Virginia, but his heart was always set on the west coast, and he signed with USC.
