Travel about 90 minutes west of Asheville down US-74 in North Carolina and you’ll find the town of Andrews. It’s the place that built Virginia Tech wide receiver Tucker Holloway.
Deep in the Nantahala National Forest in the southwest corner of the state, Andrews is squeezed between Tennessee and Georgia with a population less than 1,700. It’s the largest town in Cherokee County and is just south of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Brody Holloway, Tucker’s father, described it as a “very thick slice of Southern Appalachia Americana.”
Splitting firewood was one of Holloway’s chores growing up. He dealt with livestock – cows, horses and sheep – and ate a lot of wild game. He’s the seventh generation in his family to be brought up in the western North Carolina mountains.
