Inside The Numbers: Offensive Line And The Transfer Portal

There has been lots of talk recently about the transfer portal and about the positions that Virginia Tech needs to target during the offseason. The Hokies had specific targets this past offseason, especially quarterback, wide receiver and offensive line. Brent Pry and his staff signed two quarterbacks and a pair of wide receivers but failed to secure any offensive linemen.

TSL Subscriber QCP ran some very interesting numbers with regards to transfer portal offensive lineman. You can read his post and the entire thread by clicking here. I’m going to use his data for this week’s Inside The Numbers and provide my own commentary for what the numbers might mean.

Today we’re going to focus on the offensive line. Next week, we’ll run the data for the wide receivers who were in the transfer portal this past offseason. I’ve already accumulated the basic data for the wideouts; all that remains is to add their PFF scores for this season, put them all in a table, and analyze them. That’s more time consuming that you might think, which is why I’m splitting them up.

Quality Transfer Portal Offensive Linemen: Slim Pickings?

To refresh your memory, Virginia Tech heavily pursued Cornell graduate transfer offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad last winter, but he didn’t take a visit and ended up at Penn State. He’s been injured and finally started his first game for the Nittany Lions this past weekend. As far as I can recall, he was the only transfer portal offensive lineman that the Hokies were specifically involved with, though I’d be surprised if they didn’t at least try to kick the tires with some other prospects that we didn’t hear about. Ultimately, however, they struck out. The result is that among the current offensive linemen, the starters haven’t exactly been dominant, and there’s practically no depth.
