Miami Study: Plenty Of Talent, But Hurricanes Haven’t Gelled

Miami has a lot of money, and with it they went out and hired a staff chock-full of all-star (or at least honorable mention all-star) coaches, including Mario Cristobal, Josh Gattis, Kevin Steele, Charlie Strong, Jahmile Addae, and Alex Mirabal. Then they went out and signed guys who had started a pile of games for Clemson, Georgia, and Ole Miss.

Thanks to this “go big, or go home” mentality, Miami is currently sitting at 2-3, and those three losses are part of a skid that includes a thumping by Middle Tennessee.

That’s not exactly a fair assessment, of course. MTSU followed a spotlight loss to Texas A&M, and most every Hokie fan knows how letdown games can pop up. This is a Hurricanes team with some talent that hasn’t seemed to gel yet.

Miami Offense

The Hurricanes are your usual spread-gun outfit, with the benefits and constraints of having a pocket-preferring quarterback taking the snaps. Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal has a reputation as an Outside Zone guru, and I’ve seen a little bit of that from them; it was clicking against UNC, but the passing game was so hot that throwing took over the gameplan.
