This weekend, Flint Hill (Va.) three-star cornerback Joshua Clarke will visit a familiar place, one where he already has a scholarship offer. Over the next few weekends, he’s getting out of his comfort zone, to see some new options.

It’s all part of Clarke’s process of figuring out where he wants to play college football. There are a few options that have presented themselves already, but Clarke is keeping an open eye on others that could come into the picture.

“First, it’s the coaches that I look for,” he said. “I want to build that relationship, so I can really get a feel. I want a campus close to home, so my family can come watch me. Then, just the feel of the vibes there, the school.”

Clarke will be at Virginia Tech this weekend for its home-opener against Boston College. He was last in Blacksburg for the Hokies’ barbecue in July and has stayed in regular contact with members of the coaching staff.

“I just really finished talking to some of their coaches,” Clarke said. “I like it down there. I’m headed there this weekend. The coaches and campus are really good. I like Coach (Brent) Pry and what they’re doing there. Their DBs, I know they have a lot of history with that. So, they know what they’re talking about. Coach Cheetah (Derek Jones) is a great coach and I love him.”

Jones has been Clarke’s primary contact, and their relationship has grown, especially over the summer.

“I love everything about them, including their personalities,” Clarke said. “I met their families at the Hokie Fest barbecue. They just welcomed me with open arms.

“(Jones) said I would go in their system well, because they recruit captains. All their men, they want them to be good in the classroom, the field, and be good people. I like his values and what he gives off.”

Next weekend, Sept. 17, Clarke and his father will make the cross-country trek to see USC for its game against Fresno State. The Trojans have yet to offer a scholarship, but have made a point to reach out over the last week.

“Since Sept. 1, I’ve been in contact,” Clarke said. “That’s always been my dream school, going to the west coast and playing. Lincoln Riley’s there, so I’ve definitely got to make that visit. Since I was a kid, I just always liked USC. It’s just something about it.”

Clarke’s next planned stop is Oct. 13 for West Virginia’s Thursday night game against Baylor. He said the Mountaineers have also stepped up their communication.

“They offered me, so I want to make the visit,” Clarke said. “I haven’t met any coaches in-person, so I want to see the atmosphere. I grew up seeing Tavon Austin, Geno Smith and I’d just love to play in a West Virginia uniform.”

Clarke said he also wants to get to games this fall at Maryland and Boston College, but is unsure of specific dates. He believes his recruiting process still has some distance to go.

“I’d say I’m in the middle,” Clarke said. “I’m thinking after my season, I’ll drop a top five. Then, it’s narrowing down after that. I like Virginia Tech a lot, Maryland, Boston College, just a lot of my visits. There are some places I like the campus and the vibe for sure.”
