Virginia Tech Coach Speak

A bunch of coaches have been talking for the cameras the past few weeks; here are a few items that caught my attention:

The biggest takeaway here is Coach Pry pumping up the guys playing the Sam linebacker spot. If you remember from my previews, the Sam spot in Pry’s scheme is a lot like a big, old-school Whip player in Bud Foster’s scheme. The Sam covered low and he blitzed a lot—imagine Alonzo Tweedy, but taller and heavier. The three guys lining up at Sam—Keonta Jenkins, JR Walker, and Keli Lawson—don’t fit that mold, and their grouping at the Sam spot has been the biggest surprise for me this spring.

Jenkins and Lawson are tall enough to where they could bulk into that prototypical size for Virginia Tech, but right now they’re too skinny. Walker’s entering his fourth year in the program, so his listed size of 6’0, 217, is probably about where he caps out—I wouldn’t expect him to still be growing taller, and that height, he’s about as heavy as a college player can be while playing in space.
