Virginia Tech Football Spring Practice Discussion: Quarterbacks

Virginia Tech held the 1999 Spring Game on April 17, and it was the first Hokie Spring Game that I ever attended. I’ve mentioned in articles and on Podcasts in the past that I left that Spring Game thinking that Michael Vick was overhyped, and that maybe he’d need a season or two of development behind Dave Meyer before he was ready.

I remember his stats being poor that day, and generally speaking he didn’t do much in the game. I decided to go back and consult the Hokie Huddler that covered that Spring Game to see if they had a box score that backs up my memory, and yep, they sure did.

Vick: 3-of-10, 35 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT
Meyer: 4-of-7, 39 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INT

Yeah, so neither guy lit the world on fire, but Meyer had the better completion percentage, and he didn’t turn the ball over. The only touchdown pass of the day came via tailback Andre Kendrick, who took a pitch from Meyer and threw a 19-yard touchdown to Terrell Parham. It was not exactly a day that left you feeling warm and fuzzy about the passing game, which had struggled badly the previous year in 1998. Then of course the 1999 season happened, and the passing game struggles in the Spring Game were quickly forgotten.
