On January 29, I slept in a little bit, then got up and made some brunch, then flipped on the television to watch Virginia Tech play Florida State. To be honest with you, I wasn’t looking forward to watching the game.

At that point in time, the Hokies were 10-10 overall and 2-7 in the ACC. The season had been a disappointment on all fronts, and fans were angry. The message boards were getting a bit toxic over the subject of basketball. My moods as a person are generally tied into the mood swings of the fanbase, given it’s part of my job to hang out on the boards.

At that point, Florida State was considered a good team, the Hokies hadn’t won in Tallahassee since the 20th century, and Tech looked like it was done. I anticipated a loss, perhaps even an ugly one, and then spending part of my afternoon reading the message board posts of an understandably angry fanbase. I wasn’t a happy camper.

Then Hunter Cattoor made nine three pointers and Tech waxed FSU 85-72. I figured it was a one-off event, and that it was just a temporary release from what had been a bad season to that point. Then the Hokies kept winning. Then they won again, and then they won some more. Eventually they won 13 out of 15 games, and now here we are…ACC Champions.
