Richmond Scouting Report: Intangibles Are Key

This Saturday the Richmond Spiders crawl into town, reminding many fans of a game some years back where Virginia Tech played an FCS squad following a big non-conference loss. Let’s see what the Hokies are looking forward to. 


From their spread sets, Richmond will show shotgun and pistol formations. Tech will need to be mindful of the naked boot out of pistol, like they had to be against Louisville last year. Richmond will also use crossing backfield action like WVU does:

That’s a pistol-bone alignment in the backfield, but they’re more at a conventional shotgun depth. Everyone on defense flies up in run support and lets the receiver run free. I’d expect Richmond to have a trick play or two based on a loaded backfield like this, and probably something off jet motion, too.

They also take their time with the mesh on option runs:

It’s not quite Wake Forest, but they make a stroll of it. Tech’s done well against this style in the past, so I’d expect it to not be a problem.
