Virginia Tech Tight Ends: Will Snaps Be Affected By Improved WR Depth?

Virginia Tech returns preseason All-ACC tight end James Mitchell in 2021, and he’ll be backed up by a couple of veterans who also saw plenty of snaps last season.  Overall, the tight end position is one of the deepest on the team.

Mitchell considered leaving early for the NFL, but after getting feedback from pro personnel departments he decided to return to Tech, put on weight and improve his blocking.  He’s up to 255 right now after weighing in at 242 last season and he should be a more complete player for the Hokies in 2021.

At Virginia Tech’s open practice in August of 2019, I asked a then-VT staff member how many NFL tight ends the Hokies had on the roster.  I was expecting him to say two, referring to Dalton Keene and Mitchell.  Instead he said three, the third being Nick Gallo.

He was right on Keene, barring injury he’ll be right about Mitchell, and the jury is still out on Gallo.  Even if he’s wrong, as they say, two out of three ain’t bad.
