Inside The Numbers: The Virginia Tech Jet Sweep, Part 2

This week we’ll try to get beyond the basic box score stats. For that, we’ll need more data. Here’s what I came up with for all the jet sweeps from 2020. I pulled the stats from multiple sources, so it might not exactly correspond with other stat sheets or even what I had in part one:

The first few categories are usual suspects, but starting with “Success?” it’s a little different than what you’re probably used to. The ones and zeros are stand-ins for “yes” and “no.” So if a play was successful, it’ll have a 1 under “Success?” (we’ll get to that in a sec), and if the play resulted in a first down or TD, it also got a “1.”

A few things that jumped out were the Hokies’ propensity to use the play on running downs, and also a tendency to run the play on the opponents’ side of the field. The median yardage is six yards an attempt, which, while not as impressive as the average of 8.7 yards/carry, is still good (2019’s median was five ypc.)
