Catching Up On Virginia Tech Football And Men’s Basketball

Today I’m going to cover the major topics of Virginia Tech sports that made the news while I was on vacation.  I apologize if I missed anything, but I think today’s article is going to cover the most relevant stories.  Unfortunately, it’s mostly about people leaving, but we’ll close the article about a Hokie recruit who was recently given a fourth star by 247Sports.

Adios Chester Frazier (And Christian Webster, Too?)

I first heard about Chester Frazier leaving Virginia Tech last week, but I didn’t put much thought into it.  I just said to myself “oh well” and walked over to the beach bar to get another Mango Tango.  I figured something would happen in the world of Virginia Tech sports while I was on vacation, but I was bound and determined to ignore it, and that’s exactly what I did.

After a couple of flights and a day back in Blacksburg, I’ve finally had a chance to process it.  First off, I’ll say that in one way I’m not surprised, and in another way I am surprised.  I’m not surprised that he’s gone.  In fact, I wrote in this article that his days in Blacksburg were numbered.  I always thought it would be for a head coaching position, though, but when your alma mater offers to basically double your salary, you’ve got to make that jump.  I’m very sorry to lose him, but I don’t blame him.

Most assistant coaches have one specialty, whether it be offense, defense, recruiting, player development, or whatever else you can come up with.   Frazier has two major strengths, which means he’ll probably be a head coach sooner rather than later.  As a long-time player and coach under an elite defensive head coach like Bruce Weber, Frazier’s first strength is coaching defense.
