The Virginia Tech Friday Q&A: Staffing Models, Roster Management In 2021, And More

Justin Fuente will have more options in how to organize the Virginia Tech recruiting staff. (Ivan Morozov)

1) Now that funds are established, what are key FB program staffing models? What recruiting/quality control staffing models would best work for VT? Obviously we can’t match Bama, but what program could VT mimic to get really good bang for the buck? – Suffhokian

Chris Coleman: Every school is different in terms of what titles they assign to their employees, and sometimes a person’s title may or may not be an accurate reflection of what they actually do on a day to day basis.  That even applies to TSL.  I’m the Managing Editor, but that title doesn’t actually reflect most of the things I do (such as writing, establishing a message board presence, being a guest on the Podcast, etc.).

With that in mind, it’s tough to get a feel for whether or not I would model Virginia Tech’s staff after any other staff.  But I do have some thoughts with regards to the recruiting staff.  My idea would be to find specialists for specific positions.  For example, hiring a former wide receiver or former WR coach as the recruiting staff member responsible for evaluating and establishing contact with wide receiver prospects.

Tech already has that to a certain extent, I think.  Beau Davidson was originally hired as a quality control coach, but he has since moved to the recruiting department.  Near as I can tell, he seems to focus on linemen on both sides of the ball (plus Texas).  Davidson played defensive line at North Texas, and he’s got a good eye for both offensive and defensive linemen.  For example, you guys have heard me say (or seen me write) many times that a staff member felt that, even before he played his first game for Tech, Luke Tenuta was a first round pick.
