There have been no in-person visits during the ongoing pandemic for Knoxville Catholic (Tenn.) 2022 three-star wide receiver Tommy Winton. But a pair of virtual visits and in-person stops prior to the onset of the pandemic have set him up with a recruitment that continues to take off.

Winton (5-10, 190) claims 14 total scholarship offers, most recently from Syracuse and Coastal Carolina. But prior to last March, he made a pair of trips to Virginia Tech and has also seen West Virginia. While Winton said he’s not ready to narrow his list or move towards any decision, he has still relied heavily on those trips to get a sense of his what he wants in his next home.

“Usually, it’s just how they use someone who’s a smaller athlete, a wide receiver in general,” Winton said. “It’s how they use a slot wide receiver, if they go five-wide, percentage they pass the ball. Major wise, it’s almost the same everywhere you go. It’s really just how they use someone with my measurables, really.”

Winton,’s No. 64 wide receiver nationally in the class of 2022, took a virtual visit with the Hokies in December. He also went to a pair of games during the 2019 season. While initially Virginia Tech did not overly impress him, Winton said the Hokies have grown on him.

“My freshman year, I went up there and they didn’t have the newest equipment, just not something that popped to you,” he said. “It was small, Blacksburg, with nothing really around
