Valor Christian (Colo.) 2022 offensive tackle Jake Maikkula now claims 19 offers, most recently from Virginia Tech, California and Baylor. It’s not often that Virginia Tech football ventures to the western United States, particularly Colorado. But on Feb. 1, the Hokies gave one of the few scholarship offers they’ve made to a recruit in the Rocky Mountain state.
Maikkula has yet to venture outside of his home state for an in-person visit. As a result, he hasn’t made a significant amount of recruiting progress yet. But Maikkula said he’s at least getting a feel, albeit virtually, for a few of his options.
“The main thing I’m looking for is a place I’ll fit in well,” he said. “Just a place with good culture in the student body and the football team. Then, definitely a big-time football school with good academics to complement that.”
The last addition the Hokies had from Colorado was in the 2017 class with three-star tight end Dalton Keene. Maikkula said he’s unfamiliar with Keene, but likes what he’s seen so far with Virginia Tech.
“I’ve looked a decent amount,” Maikkula said. “I’ve done some research on them. It’s definitely a cool school for sure. I watched the video of one of their home games where they walk in to ‘Enter Sandman.’ That video is pretty cool.”
“That’s a school where I think they have great coaches,” Maikkula said. “It’s a program that will have a lot of success. I’ve had a couple of phone calls with Coach Vice and talked to a couple of other guys on the staff as well. He said he likes my film, the way I play. He said I finish blocks, and I’d be a good addition to his program in year one.”
The only school Maikkula said he’s seen in-person has been nearby Colorado. He was last on-campus...
