The Virginia Tech Friday Q&A: The UVA Basketball Game, And Replacing Darryl Tapp

1) If you could pick one player to have a career game against UVA, who would it be? I’ll vote for Jalen Cone. Seeing him drop about 10 3’s would not suck. – Fightin Gobbler

Chris Coleman: With my knowledge of basketball X’s and O’s not very strong, I’ll stick to the basics.  Off the top of my head, I would agree with your pick of Jalen Cone.  Points are hard to come by against UVA, and a big game from Cone would mean the Hokies have the ball moving well against the Pack Line, and that Cone has broken out of his mini-slump.

UVA is No. 16 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency.  That’s a bit low for them (VT, by comparison, is No. 33), but they were affected by their program shutdown.  They’ve been doing a better job over the last several weeks, if their W-L record in that span is any indication.  No matter the efficiency ranking, we know that Tony Bennett’s defense is always a tough nut to crack.

Last season UVA trounced the Hokies 65-39 in Charlottesville.  Tech was 4-of-25 from the outside, while Cone was 0-of-2 and did not score a point.  The Hokies fell 56-53 in the return meeting, with Cone scoring eight points.  Only one Tech player scored in double figures in either game: Landers Nolley (18) in the first meeting, and Nolley again (13) in the second meeting.
