Chris Coleman: With my knowledge of basketball X’s and O’s not very strong, I’ll stick to the basics. Off the top of my head, I would agree with your pick of Jalen Cone. Points are hard to come by against UVA, and a big game from Cone would mean the Hokies have the ball moving well against the Pack Line, and that Cone has broken out of his mini-slump.
UVA is No. 16 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. That’s a bit low for them (VT, by comparison, is No. 33), but they were affected by their program shutdown. They’ve been doing a better job over the last several weeks, if their W-L record in that span is any indication. No matter the efficiency ranking, we know that Tony Bennett’s defense is always a tough nut to crack.
Last season UVA trounced the Hokies 65-39 in Charlottesville. Tech was 4-of-25 from the outside, while Cone was 0-of-2 and did not score a point. The Hokies fell 56-53 in the return meeting, with Cone scoring eight points. Only one Tech player scored in double figures in either game: Landers Nolley (18) in the first meeting, and Nolley again (13) in the second meeting.
