Defensive Tackle, Class of 2023
Findlay, Findlay, OH
It wasn’t the same as a visit before the ongoing pandemic, but Findlay (OH) 2023 defensive lineman Luke Montgomery was able to get a leg up on his recruitment with a pair of visits this fall.
Montgomery, who now claims 10 scholarship offers, said he made in-person visits during the season to Penn State and Cincinnati. Neither were for games, as spectators were not permitted, but it was enough for him to at least get some type of feel for a few of his options. As he tries to get some handle on his recruitment, it’s something to at least go on when Montgomery looks at what qualities he wants to find in the school he chooses to attend and play football.
“Obviously, I look at academics, the fan base and the campus in general,” Montgomery said. “Coaches for sure. Coaches change a lot, so for a lot of people, it comes down to teammates as well. You’ll be living with them for four or five years, and that’s really your family in college.”
Virginia Tech joined the list who have offered on Dec. 29. Assistant coach Darryl Tapp, who has some connections in and around the Detroit and northwest Ohio area, made the offer.
“I didn’t know much about them,” Montgomery said. “I know about ‘Enter Sandman’ and stuff. That’s cool and has been there for a long time. Coach Tapp and Coach (Bill) Teerlinck, he coached with the Bills for a while, and then Coach Tapp played in the NFL. They offered me for D-tackle. They’re really cool. I like them a lot and I talked to them for over an hour for sure. I talked to other assistants there. I like them a lot.”
