On March 1, Sierra Canyon (Calif.) three-star defensive back DJ Harvey got his first look at Virginia Tech on a visit with his seven-on-seven teammates. Pre-pandemic, it was a genuine look at the university, the football program, and Blacksburg, uninterrupted.           

Harvey committed to the Hokies on July 4, in large part because of that trip. But until this past weekend, no other members of his family had seen Virginia Tech in-person.           

Harvey, his mother, father, brother and cousin, flew Thursday from Los Angeles International Airport to Charlotte, then to Roanoke and rented a car from there. They also finagled tickets to the Hokies’ game against Clemson. It was far from the atmosphere pre-pandemic, but it was one that for Harvey further cemented his decision, as well as put his family at ease.
