Inside The Numbers: Josh Fuga’s Improvement And Dorian Strong’s Emergence

In this week’s Inside the Numbers, we take a closer look at Virginia Tech’s defensive tackle play, specifically Josh Fuga.  We also talk about Dorian Strong’s emergence, tell a unique story about him that you won’t hear anywhere else, and look at the wide receivers grades in the passing game.

Note: The PFF numbers in today’s article are from early Tuesday afternoon.  They could change slightly based on more film review between now and Wednesday, but they won’t change enough to alter the points made in this article.

Josh Fuga Improving

Virginia Tech’s defensive tackle play has improved over the last two games, but I specifically want to highlight the performance of redshirt freshman defensive tackle Josh Fuga.  At 6-2, 323, he is Tech’s biggest defensive tackle since Tim Settle, and in my opinion he’s by far the best fit among all the tackles for the current scheme.

With the exception of a minor setback in the Duke game, Fuga also appears to be improving rapidly.  His playing time has remained the same, between 28 and 31 snaps per game, but he’s been better against the run over the last two weeks.
