With nearly all spring recruiting camps canceled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Jacksonville (Ark.) three-star defensive tackle Tyas Martin didn’t have many opportunities to earn a lot of name recognition. But the one camp that Martin did get to attend did the trick.

In January, Martin took part in the Army National Combine and was named to the All-Combine team. It was also enough to push him to the top of Rivals’ state rankings in Arkansas. After that performance, Martin added offers from Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech and North Texas.

The NCAA recruiting dead period as a result of the pandemic also eliminated any chance Martin had to take a college visit this spring. No matter, though, as one school quickly caught his attention. On Friday, he ended his recruitment with a commitment to that school: the Virginia Tech Hokies.

“Virginia Tech is a great program,” Martin said. “The coaching staff is great and the coaches said I have a chance to come in and play right away. That’s a good thing. It’s such a great program.”
