Yesterday afternoon, Myrtle Beach (SC) 2021 wide receiver JJ Jones added scholarship offer No. 19, when Virginia Tech informed him of its offer. As a result, Jones heard from a number of people. There were his coaches, his friends, a few of his football-playing friends, and a high-profile recruit who’s already on board with the Hokies.
It was all plenty to take in, as Jones weighs his options. He has more visits coming, including this weekend, but Jones isn’t quite thinking about any advancement in his recruitment.
“I’ve been in contact with (Virginia Tech) since my sophomore year,” he said. “That’s when I was playing safety, then I transitioned to wide receiver. We’ve always stayed in contact, me and the coaches. Some of my friends, Josh Burrell, Jordan Burrell, Ahmari Huggins, they were talking about making a move up there. They hit me up immediately after I got the offer and said we all have to go on a visit. It was great, knowing they wanted to offer me, and I felt accomplished.”
Jones, Rivals.com’s No. 5 player in South Carolina for 2021, received the Hokies’ offer from special teams coordinator James Shibest. They’d already established a good relationship even before yesterday’s news.
“He seems really excited,” Jones said. “He’s amped up as a coach. You want a coach who’s fired up. He texts me all the time, sends me graphics. He wants to stay in contact, and he truly seems like he wants to build a relationship with his recruits.”
