6-2, 185 currently has just one kicker ranked for the class of 2021. Ranked No. 1, North Myrtle Beach (SC) three-star Zane Smith has certainly gotten some early attention.

Smith has just one offer, from Virginia Tech, but he’s heard steadily from Penn State, Coastal Carolina, South Carolina, East Carolina and Furman. Still, even as he gets a few college visits in, Smith said he’s trying not to look too far ahead in his recruitment just yet.

“Honestly it makes me want to work harder,” Smith said of the top ranking. “Everything you’ve done, you just kind of reflect on. It makes you aware that all those hours practicing, it was all worth it. A lot of it is everything that would happen to me, if practiced the way I was supposed to, it was like my dad said. I just have to listen to him and hopefully it happens.”

The Hokies offered Smith in June after he camped with them, and Smith was back in Blacksburg Oct. 19 for their game against North Carolina. He said he’s now visited five times this year.

“I think I really got to see what the school is like during the school year,” Smith said. “I saw the kind of atmosphere they have, the type of students they have, and the family environment. I love the way the coaches treat the players, the way people respected my family,
