Offensive Line, Class of 2020
TL Hanna High School, Anderson, SC
His recruiting outlook has changed a bit, but that’s what a Power Five scholarship offer will do for most recruits.
TL Hanna (SC) offensive tackle Jonathan Brown now has 10 offers, but it’s the most recent from Virginia Tech that’s really put some zing into his recruitment. Brown also claims offers from schools like Western Kentucky, Appalachian State and Georgia State. The Hokies, however, have immediately put themselves in a good position, as Brown has two more official visits set.
Brown caught a few pundits by surprise when Virginia Tech offered him July 27. The offer came during his visit for the Blacksburg Bash barbecue. It had been in the works long before that, however.
“It definitely changes how I look at them,” Brown said. “I guess it was to an extent, a surprise. But I guess I saw it coming early on in our spring, with me talking to the O-line coach (Vance Vice), how interested he was in me. Throughout the summer, I texted him and he basically said I had an offer. It just had to come out of the head coach’s mouth to be official. But yes, it was a big surprise and definitely something I might want to do.”
The visit itself also made an impression on Brown. He spent time seeing campus, talking to Vice and getting to especially know offensive lineman Brock Hoffman. It was Brown’s second visit to Virginia Tech, after he visited for one of the Hokies’ spring practices earlier this year.
“I saw their weight room presentation and the new weight room they’re building after this season,” Brown said. “We rode around in the golf carts and saw the campus, just saw all the academic buildings and the dorms. That’s when we went to the bowling alley. I actually just sat down with one of the players and talked about Virginia Tech football, how it is for him and what he likes, how he felt about it and why he chose Virginia Tech.”
Brown said he’s been in contact with Vice all summer. Their relationship has played a big factor overall in where he sees the Hokies.
