For South Point (Belmont, NC) 2020 four-star wide receiver Rayonta Grier, recruiting is a matter of doing your homework. Yes, there’s the level of prestige and prominence that many athletes aspire to play with, but it goes much deeper.

Grier, now with 10 offers after an offer last month from Syracuse, has an idea of which programs fit his desired criteria. But it’ll take much more to figure out where he’s headed next.

“Really, when I go to colleges, I see how the program is,” Grier said. “I look for how many NFL players went there, what kind of school it is, the campus, the fan base and asking other people. I like asking how they like the school, other opinions on it. I just want to bond with the coaches and see how they are.”

This past weekend, Grier, No. 168 in the 2020 Rivals250, made his second trip to Virginia Tech this year, for the Miami game. He also was on hand in July for the Blacksburg Bash. It was Grier’s second game he’d attended at Lane Stadium, including the Hokies’ 2017 win over North Carolina. This time, Virginia Tech lost to Miami, but the experience went much deeper than that.

“It was great actually, despite the loss,” Grier said. “It was a great trip for me and my mom. Seeing how things are in Blacksburg, it’s a nice place, a great campus and they’re nice people. The team is just young now. In a few years they’re going to be great. They still came out and played great. They just have to realize win or lose, God gets the glory. I’m always hoping for a win, but life isn’t about just winning.
