Clickbait headlines are all the rage these days.
“You won’t believe what so and so looks like after 20 years!”
“Your jaw will drop when you see what happened!”
“The new pictures of so and so are literally the best ever.”
In these situations, 99.9 percent of the time you would believe it, your jaw would not drop, and the pictures are probably not the best ever.
But if I had chosen to title this article “Virginia Tech’s defensive performance on Friday night was literally Bud Foster’s best ever,” I might have been close to the truth. Tech has held other teams to fewer yards, and they’ve had plenty of shutouts through the years. They’ve also had great defensive performances against elite offenses. Holding Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, Jason Campbell and Auburn to 299 yards and 16 points in the Sugar Bowl is about as good as it gets.
But when you consider Tech’s injury situation, the pressure of winning 14 straight against UVA, the struggles of the offense, and the fact that they were facing a potential NFL quarterback who was coming in on a streak of hot performances, then Friday night’s effort was one for the ages.
